Following the success of their single, ‘Can’t Stop’ and with the albums title track, complete with Blaze mixes, currently blowing the pants off the house headz community, Reel People unveil what can only be described as one of the most beautifully crafted journeys into soulful music since the birth of Incognito! Reel People formed in February 2000 when Papa Records honcho Oli Lazarus met engineer Tom Davidson. Their first release, back in 2001, was the highly acclaimed ‘Spiritual’ featuring none other than the fantastic jazz guru Nathan Haines on flute, and was later remixed by Jon Cutler. By early 2002 Mike Patto (restless soul) had joined the group and together the three of them focused on their vision for a collaborative album project with an emphasis on creating quality soulful music. After two weeks of solid song writing Oli, Mike and Tom set about the recording and producing, drawing on a host of incredibly talented musicians and vocalists to deliver their shared vision.

‘Second Guess’ is the fruit of their labours and unleashes a beautiful selection of jazz tinged soulful grooves whilst delving into a pool of broken beats, house, funk, soul and hip hop. Amongst the vocalists involved on ‘Second Guess’ Reel People introduce soul songstress Dyanna Fearon. The niece of Phil Fearon (of Galaxy fame), Dyanna is a prolific singer/songwriter who has recently featured on the “D-Influence presents D-Vas” album. Dyanna delivers outstanding lead vocals on Washing Away, Back 2 Base, Butterflies, Steppin’ and the lush dreamy Runaway. Accompanying Dyanna by way of rap on Steppin’ is Krim – DJ Spinna’s partner in Beyond Real and MC in Jigmastas. Can’t Stop, the albums first single, features Angela Johnson of Cooly’s Hot Box fame and the title track features Jag, a rising star on the R’n’B scene who has previously worked with Modaji.

Next up on the mic spreading the good vibes is Miami’s king of all things hip hop and founder of Badgramma Records Dynas, who delivers an awesome vibe on ‘Positiive Over Negative’. The upbeat harmonious vocals on ‘The Light’ come courtesy of the 1st lady of Nu-Jazz, Vanessa Freeman who is best known for her continuous work with Kiwi Jazz Guru Nathan Haines and has forthcoming tracks with 4 Hero and Azymuth. Feel Free is delivered
by the elusive and enigmatic Peter Nelson. Amongst those providing a hotbed of harmonies and chic vocal stabs is the prolific Shelley Nelson, whose incredible soulful sounds have seen her work with the likes of Tin Tin Out and Nathan Haines, and New York’s Monet.

Alongside the songwriting and production skills of Mike, Oli and Tom, ‘Second Guess’ also features a heavyweight blend of musical craftsmanship including drum programming from DJ Spinna, Phil Asher (restless soul productions), Afronaught and Seiji (Bugz In The Attic). ‘Level’ Neville Malcolm, one of the UK’s leading soul, funk and jazz bassists who has worked with US3, Gabriel, Horace Andy, Talvin Singh, Marlena Shaw, along with a vast number of other heavyweight artistes, graces the album with his low end theory. Reel People’s Mike Patto features on keyboards and backing vocals, Basil Black II Basic adds percussive beats and Kevin Armstrong Guitar. Alongside this is the amazing brass section that is Scott Baylis (Trumpet), Jamie Anderson (Sax) and Dave Williamson (Trombone), and the legendary Nathan Haines (Flute & Sax).
